Science

This month we will begin our 2nd PLTW module called Stability and Motion, Forces and Interactions. PLTW is a nationally acclaimed STEM curriculum. In this module students are introduced to simple and compound machines.  Working in teams, they will build simple and compound machines using the VEX Construction Kits.

Math

We currently working our way through Unit 3. This unit focuses on Measurement and Time. We take a break from our textbook every Tuesday for Math Center Time. Our center time consists of Math tile cards which range from 2nd - 5th grade skills. There are also math board games, math listening activities involving mental math, and math related art activities.

Fine Arts

We will conclude our Creative World Dance Curriculum on Dec. 12. Parents are invited to attend our last class at 12:50 p.m. on Dec. 12. This is not a performance, but a sharing day. Mrs. Terran, our Aman Dance Educator, will be leading the students through several of the dances they have learned, and parents in attendance will have the opportunity to participate as well.

Reading

Students have taken their 2nd STAR Reading test online. They were also given their trimester 2 AR reading goals. As you may recall at BTS night I explained that their goals are individualized, based upon each child’s independent reading level.

AR reading is our district wide independent reading program. It is a national program and parents have access to view their child’s progress. If you click on the Accelerated Reading link from the menu there are directions for how to check on a student’s progress.

This trimester's AR deadline dates are listed above.

Finally, please don't be alarmed if you do not see projects and special writing assignments coming home. We display much of our work on the classroom bulletin boards. When the work comes down, rather than send it home, it gets saved to the children's 3rd grade scrapbooks. (Remember those white binders that were bought back in August?) Some of the work gets saved to display again at Open House in March. These scrapbooks make a nice end-of-the-year keepsake.

Student Fees: The California Constitution mandates that public education be provided to students free of charge, unless a charge is specifically authorized by law for a particular program or activity. This constitutional right of free access encompasses all educational activities, whether curricular or extracurricular, and regardless of whether credit is awarded for the educational activity. The right of free access also prohibits mandated purchases of materials, supplies, equipment or uniforms associated with the activity, as well as the payment of security deposits for access, participation, materials or equipment. A process that allows for a waiver process for an otherwise mandatory fee, charge or deposit does not render it constitutionally permissible.
