September:
In September, the students will be gaining independence with several activities to promote their literacy skills. I will provide a brief outline so please invite them to share 'details' with you.
A major beginning goal is for the children to recognize and name all 26 letters both upper and lower case. As we begin our letter of the week studies, the children will be asked to write the letters, identify the sound, locate the letter/sound in words, copy and write words and put words into sentences that make sense.
Daily 5
1. read to self: practice sweeping through text and pictures for context clues to help with word recognition. We call this 'Reading Stamina' and presently during the course of the day, they are to 'read' a minimum of 3 books every day.
2. buddy read: they read with another student who listens and observes. They also encourage one another by saying, "Great job!"
3. listening to reading: right now this is just our story time which includes comprehension skill development through critical thinking questioning.
4. working with words: students individually choose words to copy and spell, like sight words, color words, name words, etc.
5. reading and writing around the room: the students work in pairs to identify, discuss, sound out, write and read words we are studying.
